Introduction: Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano, is one of Uganda's most ancient geological wonders, with its first eruption dating back approximately 24 million years. While it once stood as Africa's highest peak, towering above Kilimanjaro at 5,895m, millennia of erosion have humbled it to its current stature of 4,321m, ranking it as the fourth-highest peak in East Africa and the eighth on the continent.

Cultural Richness: Mount Elgon is not just a geological marvel; it is also a cultural treasure trove. It is home to two tribes, the Bagisu and the Sabiny, who coexist with the marginalized Ndorobos, residing deep within the forest of Benet. The Bagisu, also known as the BaMasaba, hold a deep reverence for Mount Elgon, considering it the embodiment of their founding father, Masaba, and referring to the mountain by his name.
The Geological Giant: Covering a sprawling 4,000 square kilometers, Mount Elgon boasts the world's largest volcanic base. Straddling the border between Uganda and Kenya, it proudly wears the badge of the oldest and largest solitary volcanic mountain in East Africa. Its vast expanse, measuring 80 kilometers in diameter, rises majestically more than 3,000 meters above the surrounding plains. The mountain's lofty heights provide a sanctuary for flora and fauna, offering a refreshing escape from the sweltering plains below.
AAvian Wonderland: Mount Elgon National Park is a birdwatcher's paradise, hosting a diverse avian population of over 300 species, including the endangered Lammergeyer. The higher slopes of the mountain are safeguarded by national parks in both Uganda and Kenya, creating an extensive trans-boundary conservation area that has earned the prestigious designation of a UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve.
A Unique Ascent: Ascending Mount Elgon isn't your typical summit-oriented climb. Instead, it's a journey into a vast 40 square kilometer caldera, a unique adventure that offers an uncluttered wilderness experience. While reaching the 4,321m Wagagai Peak is an achievement, the true reward lies in descending into the heart of this extraordinary caldera.
Wildlife Secrets: Although the mammalian fauna of Mount Elgon remains relatively understudied, there are fascinating sightings to be had. Blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys are among the most commonly observed species, their playful antics delighting hikers. A small population of elephants calls these forests home, along with several montane moorland endemics, adding to the park's allure.
ACTIVITIES
1. Bird Watching
Mount Elgon National Park boasts over 300 birds with over 50 Afrotropical highland biome species living here, including the Moorland Francolin, Moustached Green Tinkerbird and the famous Alpine Chat. The Jackson’s Francolin and Black-collared Apalis are bird species that you will only find in Mt Elgon National Park. Among those limited to just a few mountains in eastern Uganda are the Black-shouldered Kite and Tacazze Sunbird. Mount Elgon is also home to the endangered Lammergeyer which can be seen, soaring above the caldera and the Suam Gorge.
2. Summit Hikes
There are 3 main trails to hike to the Mountain summit; The Sasa trailhead at Budadiri, Sipi trailhead at Forest Exploration center-Kapkwai and Piswa trailhead at Kapkwata. Mount Elgon is the prime trekking mountain in East Africa and it is a huge volcano with the largest crater of the major peaks in Africa with the caldera being one of the world’s largest.
